Door closes on Shaw toilets
Date published: 04 November 2008
SHAW’S only public toilets have been closed by Oldham Council because of anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
The authority says ongoing damage has caused frequent closures and high maintenance costs, plus a steady decline in usage.
The move will dismay some residents who have questioned why the toilets, next to Crompton Pool in Westway, are frequently out of order.
But council bosses say their decision follows discussions about the problem at Shaw and Crompton Community Council and the closure has the full support of ward councillors.
Arrangements have been made for the public to use the toilets at Crompton Pool instead.
Councillor Howard Sykes, who has led the closure campaign, said: “For too long the old toilets in Shaw marketplace have suffered from vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
“This has been a big issue for residents for many years and has created an image of neglect in an area.
“So I am delighted that the toilets have now been closed down and the service transferred to Crompton Pool.”
Because the toilet building supports the wall of Crompton Pool, full demolition will not be possible. But partial demolition has been carried out together with bricking up all remaining access.
