JOHN HENSHAW presents flowers to Jessie Tittensor watched by postmistress Mandy Gorey and postman Martyn Rhodes
THE television face of the Post Office shared a celebration glass of champagne with villagers to mark the refurbishment of a post office saved from closure.
Actor John Henshaw and 100-year-old Jessie Tittensor cut a ribbon to applause from customers when Greenfield post office reopened yesterday.
The Chew Valley Road branch, which had been under shadow of closure, is seen by locals as a meeting point in addition to providing key services.
And tributes were paid to postmistress Mandy Gorey, who took over the business eight years ago.
Post office business development manager Karen Wrangham said: “It really is Mandy’s day. It is good to see so many people supporting her endeavours.”
Jessie, who will be 101 next month, said: “I’m delighted to be asked along to today’s celebration.
“The post office is very important, particularly to elderly and those with mobility difficulties.”
David McNeeney, chairman of Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents’ Association, added: “Support for our post office has always been very strong.
“We value its vital contribution to the community, and Mandy and her staff are always so cheerful.”
But he warned: “People should be aware that they must use it or lose it.”
Actor John, who lives in Saddleworth, said: “Post offices offer a wonderful service. I was thrilled to be invited along to help celebrate such a happy occasion.”
After Jessie and John declared the post office open, they shared a celebration cake with customers.
Postman Martyn Rhodes, who has worked at Greenfield for more than 20 years, added: “The newly-designed office has given a real zing to the village.”
