FLYING high . . .winning members of the Beal Vale street dancing and cheerleading squad with Rowan Curran taking centre stage
YOUNGSTERS at a Shaw school high kicked, jumped and cheered their way to first prize in a national competition.
Energetic pupils at Beal Vale Primary leapt to the top of the National Primary Champions of Street Cheer.
And plucky Rowan Curran — the only boy on the 11-strong squad — loved every minute of his team’s success story.
Group leader and Year Five teacher Louise Hayes said: “We have about 30 children who stay after school twice a week and do street dance and cheerleading.
“There are six boys in total but Rowan was the only boy who took part in the competition. It didn’t bother him that he was surrounded by girls and he absolutely loved taking part.”
The team beat off groups from across the country to take the title at the ceremony in Blackpool last week.
The high flying squad came second when they represented Oldham at the Manchester Youth Games in June and reached ninth place at the National Street Cheer contest last year.
This Friday, the youngsters will take part in a cheerleading festival at Royton and Crompton School where they will coach pupils from other primary schools.
At the end of the event, which is part of the school sports partnership, each school will demonstrate what they have learned during a special performance.
