SADDLEWORTH rail-users and are celebrating a surprise Christmas bonus.
Starting on Sunday, December 14, Northern Rail services will double between Greenfield, Manchester and Huddersfield.
The move is the result of a sustained campaign by Councillor Richard Knowles.
Trains will provide an hourly service between the stations and Saddleworth businesses believe the link could be a shot in the arm for pre-Christmas sales.
Ian Scholes, who owns JW Buckley Bakers, Uppermill, said: “This is terrific news. Hopefully this new service will encourage people to visit us in the lead-up to Christmas.”
A spokesperson for Saddleworth Business Association said: “This is great news and will make it easier for those visitors who enjoy a Sunday trip out to enjoy all that Saddleworth has to offer.”
David McNeeney, chairman of Greenfield and Grasscroft Residents’ Association, said: “I am delighted that our need for extra trains has been recognised.
“I am sure this will lead to an increased number of visits. A lot of people will be able to see the amenities that can be enjoyed here.”
Councillor Knowles, leader of the Lib-Democrat group on the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, said: “Two years ago, Sunday trains were reinstated on an experimental basis at Greenfield after a gap of nearly 40 years.
“This new service has proved to be an outstanding success. I am delighted that Sunday train services are now being doubled to hourly frequency. This will benefit residents and visitors.
“Now that this campaign has been won, the next challenge is to secure a half-hourly off-peak daytime service and longer peak commuter trains at Greenfield, plus better connections at Stalybridge for Manchester Airport.”
Carolyn Watson, Northern Rail’s communications manager, said: “Northern has used the opportunity of the timetable changes in December to review and improve the services it offers its passengers. One example is at Greenfield.”
