Extra help for homeowners
Date published: 07 November 2008
HOMEOWNERS facing repossession can now get free advice and representation at their court hearing thanks to a new service.
The court desk service, based at Oldham County Court, has been set up to help tackle the number of mortgage repossessions in the borough, the second highest in Greater Manchester.
Oldham Council has commissioned Oldham Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and Oldham Law Centre to run the service.
It offers advice and representation on the day of the hearing to anyone who is being taken to court for rent or mortgage arrears.
It is part of a £10 million Government initiative to support homeowners who are having difficulty with their mortgage repayments.
People are advised to turn up at least half an hour before their case is due to be heard in court, bringing with them court papers, notice of possession, proof of income and benefits and details of their mortgage or tenancy agreement.
The service is available on Tuesdays, from 11am, and Wednesdays from 10am.
Councillor John McCann, cabinet member for Community Services and Housing, said: “I am delighted to see this initiative up and running in Oldham.
“The independent advice and support offered will help to prevent homelessness and relieve the stress and anxiety homeowners experience in these circumstances.
“Nationally court desks have had a massive impact, helping 85 per cent of their clients by having their repossession order suspended.
“The fact that Oldham County Court deals with the second highest number of mortgage repossessions in Greater Manchester demonstrates why this service is so desperately needed.”
Homeowners are urged not to wait until they are facing court action before seeking help with arrears.
Oldham CAB operates a free housing advice drop-in session every Monday, between 1pm and 4pm, and every Wednesday, between 2pm and 4pm, from their offices at 1-2 Ashcroft Court, Peter Street, Oldham.
A booklet entitled “Are you worried about your mortgage?” has also been produced by the National Homelessness Advice Service.
This is available from Oldham Council One Stop Shop, the Housing Option Centre at First Choice Homes Oldham, or on the Oldham Council website www.oldham.gov.uk.
