DELIGHTED . . . Councillor Howard Sykes couldn’t wait for the loos in Shaw to be demolished
AFTER years of vandalism and anti-social-behaviour, Oldham Council has finally closed the old public toilets next to Crompton pool in Shaw.
The steady decline in use plus the rising level of damage has resulted in high maintenance costs and frequent closures of the only public facilities in the town.
The action follows discussions about the problem with the Shaw and Crompton Community Council and the closure has the full support of local councillors.
Leader of Oldham Council, Councillor Howard Sykes who led the campaign to close the only public toilets in Shaw, said: “For too long now the old toilets in Shaw market place have suffered from vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
“This has been a big issue for local residents for many years and has created an image of neglect in the area.
“I am delighted that the toilets have now been closed and the service transferred to Crompton Pool.”
Because the public lavatory building supports the wall of Crompton Pool, full demolition will not be possible. But partial demolition has been carried out together with bricking up all remaining access.
