A NUMBER one neighbour is looking forward to a bumper shopping spree after scooping the top prize in a Chronicle competition.
Harry Brown, of Long Lane, Chadderton, won £500 worth of Morrisons vouchers after being crowned a community champion by his neighbours in the Chronicle’s local hero competition.
Wonderful
Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is also quids in after Mr Brown nominated them as his chosen charity to get a £500 donation as part of his prize.
Harry’s neighbour Renee McLintock, who nominated him, said: “Harry is a wonderful friend to his neighbours. He does our shopping at the newsagents, post office, chip shop, chemist and bank —and takes one of us to church and back once a week.
“He is always there for odd jobs and repairs and has turned the alley behind our homes into a beautiful garden planted with wonderful flowers and hanging baskets, so we can sit out all summer and enjoy the comfort of neighbourly chats.”
Sprightly Harry, who is 75-years-old, said: “I feel elated that people have recognised what I do for them.
“I get a lot of pleasure out of helping people. It’s wonderful that money is going to Dr Kershaw’s because my sister-in-law was in there only a few months ago — and I know all their patients are well looked after.”
The Morrisons vouchers, which must be spent at the Failsworth store, look set to make it a very Merry Christmas this year, but kind-hearted Harry added: “I’ll remember to treat my neighbours with them too.”
