Charity challenge in memory of Emma

A POLICE sergeant and friends put their best foot forward to raise cash in memory of a deceased colleague.

Emma Herman, who worked on the inquiry desk at Saddleworth police station for many years, died after a long fight with cancer.

However, Sgt Craig Johnson, was determined to keep her memory alive and recognise the invaluable work done by two charities who helped Emma.

So, with the help of 22 other walkers, they raised £2,750 on The White Peaks Challenge Walk which was split equally between Christie hospital and the Macmillan nurses.

Saddleworth Round Table paid for the cost of a support vehicle, fuel and hire of a driver, and all the walkers completed the gruelling, 25-mile circuit.

Sgt Johnson, who has worked in Saddleworth and Lees for 19 years, said: “I was deeply touched by the massive support from friends and colleagues.

“We raised a magnificent sum of money and I’d like to thank everyone, including Saddleworth Round Table and Saddleworth Band Contest committee who donated £660.”

Sgt Johnson presented the cheques to Father Barry Lomas (pictured) Oldham Police Divisional Chaplin, at the Church Inn, Uppermill.

Father Lomas, conducted Emma’s funeral service. A separate cheque for £200 was handed to Oldham Mountain Rescue Team for its support.
