Ian Thomas blasts away at the damaged wall watched by club secretary Fred Halliwell
A CLEANING company has played Good Samaritan to a rugby club plagued by vandalism.
And the helping hand was extended after Ian Thomas of High Level Cleaning, Fitton Hill, saw the plight of Hollinwood Rugby League Club highlighted in the Evening Chronicle.
In the attack, the whole exterior of the brick building and a metal storage container were left covered with graffiti.
Vandals also hurled tiles from the roof and built bonfires on the training area.
Secretary Fred Halliwell was worried that the cost of clearing up might close the club.
Excellent
He said: “We had graffiti all over the walls — it looked terrible. Visiting teams must have thought they were visiting Beirut or Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
“It is excellent that Ian Thomas has come round and cleaned it up for us for free. We are very grateful and we just hope that the vandals stay away in future.”
Ian Thomas said: “I used to run a football club and I know that things can be tight. I had a little bit of spare time so I decided to help.
“We have now got the graffiti off the walls and things are looking a lot better.”
The club, in Fields New Road, has suffered vandalism over the past four years including damage to the roof and to the boiler.
