Ex-councillor dies, aged 72

Edward Bennett
FORMER Conservative councillor Edward Bennett has died, aged 72.
Mr Bennett, who’s brother Norman is a former Labour councillor, died in hospital on Friday.
A retired community worker, he also leaves another brother, Harold, and a nephew, Alan.
Over the years, Mr Bennett, who liked to be known as Ted, devoted himself to a number of local organisations, including Oldham’s carnival committee, the Mayor’s Appeal committee and Oldham Countryside Preservation Society.
During his time with the East Moorland Mountain Rescue Organisation he helped to free six pot-holers who had been trapped for 56 hours in the Yorkshire Dales.
When he retired, Mr Bennett developed a passion for model cars and enjoyed putting on exhibitions to raise money for charity.
The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2pm, with service and committal at Oldham Crematorium.
