OVER 50 voluntary groups are sharing more than £5,000 raised from this year’s Failsworth Carnival weekend.

The local organisations and the Mayor’s Appeal fund received cheques at Holy Family Church, Failsworth, to support their valuable work.

The windfall comes despite reduced takings caused by the bad weather during carnival weekend in July.

Groups receiving cheques ranged from baby clubs to Old People’s Welfare, from residents groups to scouting and guiding.

Oldham’s deputy mayor councillor Jim McArdle received the cheque on behalf of the mayor Shoab Akhtar. A trophy for best group collector was awarded to Hope Methodist Guides and Brownies and to Carnival Princess Isobel for best individual collector.

Failsworth’s own royal family, Carnival Queen Louise, Princess Isobel and Rosebud Hollie presented the cheques.

And entertainment was provided by the carnival’s Stars in Your Eyes winner and runner up who have teamed up to form Double Essence.

The carnival committee is looking for additional members to join and lend a hand for next year’s event.

Meetings are held the last Tuesday of the month at Hope Methodist Church, Oldham Road, from 8pm.

Anyone interested in supporting the work of the committee including the Failsworth Carnival, Santa Singalong, the Failsworth royalty and other events held throughout the year, can attend or call 0161-682 9468.
