Don’t play Santa to thieves

OLDHAMERS are being urged to leave their Christmas presents out of sight to thwart burglars.

Since the beginning of October there have been 303 burglaries — 105 of which have been down to some form of insecurity such as unlocked doors and open windows.

Chief Insp Rob Tinsley said: “With Christmas getting closer, burglars will be looking for rich pickings as people buy presents and keep them in their homes.

“Keeping valuables out of view, closing and locking all doors and windows, putting the alarm on and leaving a light on are all simple ways to deter thieves.”

The call for residents to lock up is part of Operation Sparrow, a major initiative to combat the recent rise in burglary across Oldham.

Over the next few months, there will be more officers on the streets to act as a deterrent to thieves, disrupt criminal activity and reassure residents living in vulnerable areas.

Known offenders will also be targeted across the division.
