It’s crazy paving around defunct signs

A SHAW resident has praised the improvements to Newtown Street in the town centre — but blasted the council for leaving redundant signs in place.

Harvey Hinchliffe, of Netherhouse Road, said: “The street was repaved and cobbled, and finished about a week ago with bollards blocking off the end. It’s a nice job.

“But someone has done this job with no thought, because there are signs for no left turn, 20 mph zone, and 30 mph, which are redundant.

“They have done the pavement on both sides but now they are going to have to dig them up again to remove the signs.”

Newtown Street, near the Playhouse Two theatre, and other town centre streets are being improved with money from the developers of the new Asda supermarket.

Other work includes a zebra crossing on Greenfield Lane, new and improved signs for pedestrians and traffic, new cycle stands, improvements to passageways, information signs and maps.

A council spokesman said: “We are aware of the signs, which will come down, but we are waiting for United Utilities to disconnect electrical supplies.”
