A GROUP of Saddleworth musicians have come up with a great idea to help disadvantaged children at Christmas.

The Billy Coxon Seven will be appearing at Dobcross Band Club, and people attending the concert are asked to bring a present.

The concert, which has free entry and an additional DJ, will be staged on Friday, December 12, from 8pm.

“All we want is people there to enjoy our music, and for each adult to bring a wrapped Christmas present for a child - stating what sex it is suitable for and the age group,” said Carl.

All the toys will be given to the Salvation Army for distribution among children across Manchester

Tickets are available by contacting the band club on: 01457-8783741.

*Away from charity work, the band faces a continual problem, it struggles to find Saddleworth venues at which it can perform.

The Billy Coxon Seven comprises a young brass section and old rockers who provide a wide range of entertainment from blues and soul to ska.

Front man and lead singer Carl Taylor, from Uppermill, said: “We started off with seven members but now we have 11, and sometimes we grow even more to accommodate additional players.

“We have so many great performers with a wide range of musical skills it’s not surprising everyone wants to appear in our shows.

“But the problem is that there are not many venues in Saddleworth that can accommodate us. We have to reduce the band’s size just to get gigs sometimes.”
