Dazzling switch-on for Royton
Date published: 28 November 2008
ROYTON is sparkling and full of festive spirit after a bumper crowd enjoyed the Christmas lights switch-on.
Two children — Megan Hall (6) and Bradley Lee (8) from the Royton After School Care Association (RASCA) — became celebrities for the day after being chosen to turn on the lights.
After last night’s switch-on, residents crowded into the town hall where every child was given a present by Santa Claus.
A DJ was on hand to get the party started with Christmas music, while there was refreshments and free goody bags provided by the Oldham Chronicle. A raffle also raised £80, which will go towards next year’s event.
Royton councillor Steven Bashforth said: “There must have been at least 400 people there.
“The Royton Lights Association started it in 2003 and thanks to their efforts and donations from the community the event has grown.”
