A HEARTLESS thief who stole poppy collection boxes from three Failsworth pubs carried out the shameful act to pay off his mounting drugs debt following his release from prison.
Carlo John Edward Lanzon (25), of Shilford Drive, Ancoats, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft at Oldham Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Lanzon escaped a prison sentence but judge Mel Simms told him his actions were despicable.
The judge gave Lanzon a 12-week custodial sentence — suspended for 18 months, linked to 12-month supervision order and drink rehabilitation.
Jackie Stott, prosecuting, described how Lanzon first stole the first collection box — which contained more than £100 — from the Mare and Foal, Ashton Road, on November 8.
The following day, Lanzon struck again — this time stealing a box worth £150 from the Last Orders Pub, Oldham Road.
A similar incident happened at the Church Inn, Oldham Road, when Lanzon stole a £100 box on November 11 at 6.55pm.
Lanzon, who had a cut above his eye, was arrested on December 3 after CCTV footage matched with a TV appeal carrying his description.
The court heard how Lanzon had a history of thefts — he carried out eight this year for which he was given a six-month prison sentence in August.
Elizabeth Ridgeway, defending, said: “Due to his previous drug taking, his debts were mounting while he was in prison. He is not proud of his actions.”
Lanzon was also ordered to pay £300 compensation to the British Legion and £80 prosecution costs.
Passing sentence, Mr Simms said: "Your actions crossed the custody line.
“We can send you to prison but we have taken into consideration your representation.
“Next time it happens, you won’t be going home.”
