Disabled people’s day for working
Date published: 05 December 2008
DISABLED people were given a chance to find out more about employment opportunities at the Link Centre, Oldham.
Held to mark the International Day of Disabled People, the event was organised by Oldham Council’s Disability Information Point.
The theme of the day cantered on dignity and justice and the right of everyone to work.
Mini plays were a feature of the event — highlighting how employment opportunities for disabled people have improved over the years — performed by people from the Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People and Oldham Council’s adult and community services.
There were information stalls covering all aspects of employment, benefits and issues arising from jobs and a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter was on hand to offer assistance.
JobCentre Plus, Access to Work, Connexions, Remploy, Breakthrough, Standguide and The Shaw Trust were also in attendance.
Cabinet member for adult services and health Councillor Brian Lord said: “Staff and volunteers at Oldham Disability Information Point organised this event to bring together all the organisations that can offer employment opportunities or support to disabled people.
“It also celebrated the developments, changes and new opportunities available for disabled people seeking employment.”
