Bank raiders threatened staff at knifepoint

POLICE have revealed that thieves threatened staff with knives during last week’s robbery at a Shaw bank.

One of the three robbers grabbed a worker at knifepoint and forced her to open the safe during the attack at the Halifax Bank, Market Street at 3.30pm on Thursday.

Another raider made staff take cash out of the safe and drawers as the third held the door of the bank open.

All three ran out to a waiting car driven by a fourth offender. No one was injured in the incident.

It’s the second time the bank has been raided this year.

Initial reports suggested that two shots had been fired inside the bank but police say that no firearms were used. All the offenders were described as white men wearing dark coloured clothing and balaclavas.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Detective Constable Ian Lloyd said: “While these offenders didn’t injure anyone, they left people in fear of their lives. The area was very busy at the time so we are appealing to anyone who may have seen the offenders as they pulled up to the bank or as they drove off.”
