HISTORY trail . . . Councillor Buckley with the society’s flagship book “Mapping Saddleworth”
(but that was back in the 14th century)
Time-team sleuths have uncovered a fascinating insight into the “Wild West” lifestyle of Saddleworth in medieval times.
Mike Buckley, chairman of Saddleworth Historical Society, carried out research in London with Uppermill internet expert, Victor Khadem.
Councillor Buckley, Oldham’s history champion, said: “Our findings have completely transformed our understanding and perspective of the area.
“Saddleworth really was a lawless place in the 14th century — just like something from the Wild West.
“There is a litany of cases or assault, battery — and even murder — during these very colourful times.
“There were vigilante groups who were encouraged to carry arms because the nation was fighting other wars.
“But in reality, lots of trouble seemed to stem from attacks on each other.”
Councillor Buckley was elaborating on his annual report to the Historic Society which has shown a healthy increase in membership to 500 during the last year.
Sales of its flagship publication “Mapping Saddleworth” stand at around the 850 mark and there will be a book signing at Uppermill Library tomorrow, 2-4pm.
Meanwhile, work continues on the second edition which is hoped will be published in autumn next year.
Work is also under way on a companion volume to the popular “Saddleworth Villages”.
“Saddleworth Hillsides and Hamlets” will bring together text of local interest trails with a new set of illustrations by artist Geoff Toms.
It is planned for launch at the Saddleworth Festival in 2011.
