Moorside’s cross is Braziliant

WATCHING over Moorside . . . the cross on Besom Hill
THE sunlight catches a scene of housing and moorland in Moorside.
And if Rio de Janeiro can have its statue of Christ on the hill above the area, Moorside too can have its cross. Church members from St Thomas’s were responsible for this declaration of faith. And according to the Church of England area dean’s office in Oldham, it has created quite a degree of interest.
Erected a decade ago, the cross on Besom Hill is the centre of attention every Good Friday when members of St Thomas’s, Moorside, and the local East Oldham Methodist Church gather around it for a united service.
Once an area which contained brickwork, the hilltop scene looks across a wide area stretching through Shaw to Royton. In the foreground is housing around Ripponden Road and Wilkes Street.
