WET WORK: a typical Grotton Hollow scene in bad weather
THE centre of a Saddleworth village has been dealt a double whammy which residents claim could cause death or injury.
Angry Councillor Barbara Beeley has tagged Grotton Hollow as “Grotton Wallow” when vast pools of water appear after rainstorms.
Councillor for Saddleworth West and Lees, she said: “There have been problems at Grotton Hollow for years after a drain collapsed.
“I have received a lot of complains and have taken the issue up with Oldham Council officials.
“Water causes real problems when it settles on the roadway. It is like hitting concrete when you’re driving and, in some places, the water is only inches away from people’s front doors.”
Businessman Barrie Lees, who lives close to the water, said: “The whole area needs a proper examination.
“Our troubles started a couple of years ago when a large hole appeared in the roadway.
“It is a death trap — an accident waiting to happen.”
Meanwhile, 94 residents have sent a petition to Oldham’s new chief executive, Charlie Parker, demanding action over a pelican crossing which is causing problems for pedestrians and motorists alike.
Richard Darlington, of Grotton Community Association, said: “The pelican lights used to be quick but the timing was changed and now they’re so slow pedestrians cross when there is a lull in the traffic.
“I’ve also seen motorists driving through on red when they see no pedestrian waiting. Something must be done soon, before someone gets killed or injured.”
Tony Noblet, Oldham’s service director for highways, said: “A scheme is being considered to tackle the large pools of standing water. This would involve new piping to remove the pressure on the drains.
“In the meantime extra gully cleaning is been carried out to minimise the problem,” he added
