Hotline to help homeowners

Date published: 17 December 2008

A NEW helpline has been launched to offer support to residents who are suffering financial difficulties and are threatened with losing their home.

Operated by First Choice Homes Oldham, it will be the main access point for a range of local initiatives to help tenants and homeowners.

Residents will be fast-tracked to receive advice and support from Oldham Citizens Advice Bureau aimed at them keeping their home.

Homeowners who are being taken to court for mortgage arrears can also receive advice, support and representation from the court desk facility at Oldham County Court.

Those who are unable to avoid repossession may be eligible to get further support from the new Mortgage Rescue Service.

Following a financial assessment homeowners may be offered a shared equity option which will reduce their mortgage payments, or the option to sell to a housing association and remain in their home.

Cabinet Member for community services and housing, Councillor John McCann, said: “The helpline will allow Oldham residents experiencing financial difficulties to access a range of support and advice.

“Among the support now available is the successful court desk service, which is currently helping a number of people get their repossession order suspended.

“The new Mortgage Rescue Service will offer a lifeline to eligible homeowners who have exhausted all other avenues.”

Residents experiencing financial difficulties can call the helpline on 0800-954 2789, Monday to Friday 8.40am-5pm.
