Cash for over-60s willing to downsize

COUNCIL chiefs are offering a cash incentive to encourage people living in large family homes to downsize.

A shortage of family properties has led to a large waiting list but Oldham Council says there are many people living in big houses who could move to a smaller home.

Working with First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) and a range of housing associations in the borough, the council wants to identify older people who wish to look for “smaller, easier-to-run homes”.

It’s launched the incentive scheme, funded by Oldham Housing Investment Partnership (OHIP), to assist with moves.

A financial support package of up to £600 is being offered to each household over 60 who downsizes.

As an alternative, a dedicated support officer could assist directly with the move.

Housing providers are also prepared to waive the four-week notice period, where possible, for people who wish to move quickly.

The initiative has been launched to coincide with the release of homes refurbished by Housing 21 under the PFI2 Project, and there are a number of bungalows that have now been completed.

The properties have been refurbished with new kitchens and bathrooms, decorated throughout and fitted with new carpets, heating systems and boilers.

Cabinet member for community services and housing, Councillor John McCann, said: “There are many people out there who are living in larger homes that they actually don’t need or want and we would like to encourage those people to consider a smaller home.

“I must emphasise that any moves will be by choice, no one will be forced out of their current homes if they wish to stay..”

A show house has opened in Chadderton for people considering downsizing.
