Unlucky break for mum and son
Date published: 17 December 2008
THE treacherous winter weather spelled double trouble for one unlucky family, after a mum and her son both slipped and broke an ankle within three days of each other.
Richard Metcalfe (30) was the first to take a tumble, when he slipped on sheet ice near his Mossley home and ended up in plaster.
The family duly rallied round and his mum, Janet, was all geared up to look after him at his Strawberry Lane home when she too went over on the ice near her Royton home. Richard said: “I couldn’t believe it when my mum texted me a photo of her in plaster just three days after my fall saying, ‘guess what I’ve done’.
“I honestly thought she was winding me up.”
Janet (59), of Broadway, said: “I was getting ready to take all Richard’s meals round when his wife went back to work and then I went over too. Everyone in the family was joking that I’d only done it so I could get out of doing all his cooking!”
And it is going to be an interesting Christmas for this accident-prone pair.
Richard said: “My mum has a long sofa with two big corners.
“It looks like we’ll both be sitting o it, one at each end, asking all the family to bring our turkey and mince pies in.”
