CHRISTMAS revellers are being warned to drink responsibly and stay safe during the busiest weekend of the festive season.
Operation Advent, a force-wide day of action today targeting alchol-related crimes and violence has been launched by Greater Manchester Police, together with the NHS, ambulance and fire services, and the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive.
There will be more police officers on the streets to offer reassurance to the many people out shopping and socialising over the festive period.
CCTV, the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system, metal detectors, transport inspectors, British Transport Police officers and special constables are among the additional resources that are being brought in to supplement local officers policing town centre hotspots throughout the day and evening.
Chief Insp Anthony Simpson said: “Victims of alcohol-related crime and often offenders make themselves vulnerable or make wrong decisions when they have had too much to drink.
“This day of action is being carried out to show the public that we are all working together to take care of those who need it but we ask that people stop and think about their own safety first.”
Operation Advent will also be focusing on domestic violence as police see a rise in incidents in the lead-up to Christmas.
Divisional officers will be out visiting repeat victims over the weekend to ensure their safety.
