37 seconds — how long it takes to ruin Christmas

A blazing Christmas tree engulfed in flames within seconds shows the dangers that they can pose, in a warning issued by fire chiefs.

The dramatic images were released by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service using a real Scotch pine tree, which had been in a dry, warm home for several days.

It shows how, within just five seconds of ignition, it becomes engulfed in flames and within a minute the room is ablaze with scorching flames and choking black smoke — and even if a person were awake inside they probably would not be able to escape, according to fire fighters.

The Greater Manchester service attended 121 accidental fires in homes over the Christmas period last year.

County Fire Officer Barry Dixon warned: “Before placing fairy lights on your tree make sure the wiring has been checked for splits and always switch them off when you leave the house or go to bed.

“Never put candles on or near your tree and make sure that presents placed under the tree are kept well away from anything which could ignite the wrapping paper.

“But, most importantly of all, make sure you test your smoke alarm and if you haven’t already got one why not buy one as a stocking filler — and make sure you have one properly fitted on each level of your home.”
