Poppy appeal raises £33,483 in Oldham

Generous Oldhamers raised a record amount at this year’s poppy appeal before Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
The town centre collections brought in £33,483 for the Oldham branch of the Royal British Legion. The money was made up by collections at Spindles (£6,204), by the Legion members; Town Square (£6,026), by the Royal Artillery Association; Sainsbury’s (£5,047), by the Parachute Association; Market Hall (£1,875), by the Royal Air Force Association; and Netto, (£1,614), by the Sea Cadets.
Spokesman Norman Bennett said: “It was a record year despite the recession. The rest was made up in pubs, clubs, schools and so on.”
