Have a say on policing

Date published: 29 December 2008

WILLING volunteers are needed to give advice on how policing impacts on communities and how it can be improved.

The Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) is appealing for applications for all three of its strategic Independent Advisory Groups (IAGs).

Each group has a theme — race; disability; and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender — and there are vacancies in each one.

Majid Hussain, GMPA’s lead member for equality and diversity issues, said: “IAGs provide a valuable service and the authority may consult them for a number of reasons.

“For example, we may be looking to introduce a new policy which has an impact on communities.

“It’s important for us to make that decision with a clear understanding of how such a decision may affect Greater Manchester communities. IAGs provide us with the insight we need.”

Independent advisers are critical friends who can advise and challenge how GMPA and Greater Manchester Police work.

They help build trust and confidence between police and the communities they serve.

Anyone over 18 who lives or works in Greater Manchester can apply to be an IAG member by completing an application form.

Following an assessment of the form, all short-listed candidates are invited to attend an interview conducted by GMPA staff.

Those appointed are then required to attend a one-day induction training session.
