Police to visit and video known criminals
Date published: 06 January 2009
OLDHAM police have launched a fresh crackdown on robbery, burglary and vehicle crime.
The three-month Operation Resolute will see more officers and mounted patrols in hot-spots across the borough such as Alt and Holts.
Known offenders will be visited by plain clothes and uniform officers, some with video cameras.
Footage of them will then be reviewed to see if they fit witness descriptions.
Chf Insp Rob Tinsley said: “It is really getting a bit up close and personal with them and reminding them we are here and won’t tolerate crime.”
Operation Resolute was launched on Saturday and is backed by extra resources from the force’s mounted and dog units.
The scheme follows Operation Sparrow which targeted burglary in Oldham in the run up to Christmas. The figures are still being analysed, but show that the crackdown prevented an expected seasonal increase in the crime.
“It is building on that, making sure we do not take our foot off the gas,” said Chf Insp Tinsley.
Supt Chris Sykes urged offenders to make a resolution to steer clear of crime in 2009, adding: “By launching this operation we are sending out a clear message to offenders that they are being watched.
“We will be doing all we can to make sure this year is a safe one for Oldham residents.
“The extra police presence will also provide reassurance to people and encourage them to report crime.”
