WORK to renovate Greenfield train station is back on track thanks to the appointment of a new contractor.

The refurbishment programme, which includes a new ticket office, improved waiting areas and enhanced security, came to a halt when the previous contractors went into administration.

Irwins Ltd, from Leeds, will now complete the work and test the new facilities before they are open to the public next month.

Paul Griffiths, GMPTE’s interim projects director, said: “We have been working very hard behind the scenes to get this project back on track. I am pleased that we are now in a position to move forward. We appreciate how frustrating the delay has been for passengers and we are grateful for their patience.

“I am sure they will find the improvements worth the wait.”

The new ticket office will include seating and will be wheelchair and pram accessible. A digital CCTV security system will also be installed.

There are two new external covered waiting areas on the platform, which were temporarily available to passengers over the festive period.

The station will continue to be open to passengers throughout the project and the temporary ticket office will stay open until the work is finished.

Around 80 parking spaces are available at nearby Saddleworth Rangers Rugby Club.

The free car park, which is funded by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, is staffed from 7am to 8pm, Monday to Friday.
