Head to the moors — and find romance

Date published: 14 January 2009

STAFF on the Marsden Moor estate are offering single Oldhamers a dating opportunity with a difference, with a special Valentine’s event on the moors.

Described as like speed dating, but with an environmental twist, the event will see people doing conservation work together while on a date, so they can get to meet like-minded people and learn new skills.

Anyone hoping to give it a try is asked to meet at the White Moss car park on the A635 Greenfield to Holmfirth Road, which is shortly before a takeaway van called Snoopy’s, at 10am on Valentine’s Day.

Alison Mills (right), community warden for the Marsden Moor estate, will provide refreshments, but participants are asked to bring their lunch, some waterproofs, wellingtons and warm clothes.

Alison said: “We will be spending the day blocking gullies with heather bales to help stop the peat from eroding. It’s certainly an unusual take on dating, but if people come into it with an open mind and don’t mind getting a bit muddy then they will have a great time. I staged a similar event when I worked in York and it went down really well.”

Tickets for the event are priced at £5 and are available by calling Alison on 01484-847016 or 07743-306321.
