YOUNGSTERS in Oldham have found exciting new ways to climb to good health.
A climbing tower, over seven metres tall, was the highlight of an event designed to get children more active.
The tower, owned by Oldham Community Leisure (OCL) and purchased with funding from Sports 4 Life, Street Games and Community 1st Oldham, was placed in Market Square and staffed by qualified instructors from Oldham Outdoor Pursuits.
Their co-ordinator Alan Keane said: “We are aiming to develop young people’s awareness about fun and exciting alternatives to traditional physical activities.”
There was also the opportunity to try out Nintendo Wii games, take part in a group cycle ride, and find out more about Oldham’s MEND (Mind Exercise Nutrition Do it!) programme designed to get seven to 13-year-olds fitter, healthier and happier. A new programme is due to begin soon and will be promoted by an information stall in Spindles Town Square shopping centre.
The tower was also used to promote the launch of the new National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme, in which children can take part in climbing and link it to the national curriculum.
The structure will now be touring a number of schools and community groups in disadvantaged areas of the borough to encourage young people to get more involved in sports. For more information visit www.oldhamoutdoorpursuits.co.uk or www.oclactive.co.uk
