BORED, nothing to do? Now’s your chance to join a group of residents in Sholver and Moorside who want to put the fun back in their neighbourhood.
A handful of residents have been arranging events, particularly for the young people in the area, for some time.
Most have centred on Sholver Green, directly outside the Northgate Pub and have created a lot of interest and proved to be very successful. So much so that last year the St James and Waterhead Community Council promised the resident based group £500 to help fund future events.”
But now they want others to join in.
Ward Councillor Roger Hindle has held several meetings with the residents as well as representatives from Groundwork, community groups and sports organisations to get the group off the ground.
Sonja Costello said: “The children’s parties at Christmas and Hallowe’en were the latest in a line of community events we have held.
“A lot of thanks has got to go to Peter Edwards, the landlord at the Northgate pub, and all his staff. They have been brilliant and we couldn’t have managed without them and their generosity. We have a terrific facility in the Sholver Green and while we are committed to protecting its heritage, we also want to see it used for the benefit of our local community.”
Councillor Hindle added: “Firstly we need a name for the group. We have had a couple of ideas, but would welcome any other suggestions.
“As soon as we have decided on a name, we would like local children to design us a logo. Prizes will be given for the best designs and overall winner.
“We are also hoping to get involved with other organisations and events in the area, such as St Thomas Church and its Easter walk around the parish boundary.
“We are starting to arrange a mid-summer Old England fair as we have been told Sholver Green dates back to Viking times.”
The next meeting will be at the Northgate pub on Thursday, January 29 from 6pm.
