A fun-day with a serious message got Oldham young people thinking about sexual health yesterday.
Drag act the Pike-ettes confronted the teenage mums at the drop-in run by the Key to the Door charity.
They performed their routine at the Primrose Bank community centre, underlining the safe sex and protection message.
Staff from the contraception and sexual health service (CASH) from Oldham Community Health Services were on hand to offer screening for sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy testing and to offer one-to-one advice.
The fun-day was incorporated into a regular drop-in session, run by Key to the Door every week, between 11am until 2pm at Primrose Bank Residents’ Centre.
The sessions incorporate crafts, exercise, healthy cooking, and talks about topics such as domestic violence. There is also a crèche.
In addition to Primrose Bank, there are other drop-in sessions across the borough, which are free and confidential at:
Moorside Medical Centre, Ripponden Road every Monday between 3.30 and 5.30pm; Glodwick Primary Care Centre, Glodwick Road, every Tuesday, 1 and 3pm and Friday, 10am and 12.30pm; Cannon Street Health Centre, Oldham, every Wednesday between 5.30 to 7.30pm, Thursdays between noon and 1.15pm and Fridays between 5.30 and 7.30pm; Failsworth Primary Care Centre, Ashton Road West,Wednesdays, 9.30 and 11.30am and Crompton Health Centre, High Street, Shaw, every Thursday, 5.30 and 7.30pm.
