Sarah is fourth to sign up for squad

TRAINING at the Royton Air Cadets has become a family affair after new cadet Sarah Hamilton made it four in a row.

There are plenty of familiar faces there for commanding officer Flt Lt Mark Hamilton as Sarah is the fourth and last of his children to join the squadron.

He started the generation game and is well versed in what his 13-year-old daughter can expect from the 1855 Squadron as he has been a member for 31 years since he too joined aged 13.

Sarah’s eldest sister, Kerry (20) — who is now at university in Bristol — was the first to follow in her father’s footsteps back in 2001.

It wasn’t long before Mark’s son Russell (16) joined and last year saw the arrival of Kate (14) — who, like her sister, is a pupil at the Blue Coat School, Oldham.

Sarah made it a full house by joining with eight other new cadets and is now embarking on a challenging and adventurous four month induction programme to become a fully fledged member of the corps.

Flt Lt Hamilton said: “I am so happy that my children have taken an interest in what I do here and have wanted to join themselves. It is a fantastic organisation and it keeps going from strength to strength.

“The aims of the corps are to promote and encourage a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force, to provide training that will be useful in the services and civilian life and to foster the spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship.”
