Billy cleans up in search for a job

OLDHAM Remploy has come to the rescue of a disabled man by helping him back into work.

Billy Whitehead (47), who has a progressive disability in his right hand, became depressed after a long list of job applications to local businesses ended in rejection.

The former baker had been out of work for eight years, and the number of failed applications led him to believe he would never work again.

But just as he gave up searching . . . there was a nice surprise.

Rochdale’s Jobcentre Plus referred him to Remploy, which helps people overcome barriers to finding work.

Billy started a training course at Remploy’s new recruitment branch in Union Street, Oldham, and signed up for a place at Remploy’s cleaning academy in Burnley.

The academy teaches candidates professional cleaning techniques, using a mock up of a supermarket, complete with fully stocked shelves, refrigerators and checkouts, so that cleaning theory can be put into practice.

Billy, of College Bank, Rochdale, explained: “With my new skills, Remploy then helped me apply for a job at Asda’s store in Rochdale.

“The rest is history. I was appointed and I’m already aiming to apply for promotion in the near future.”

Billy is highly regarded by his boss Paul Walsh, who is impressed with his attention to detail and determination to do a good job.

Job seekers and employers are invited to contact Remploy’s employment advisers at the Oldham branch by calling 0300 456 8046.
