A VISIT to University Campus Oldham proved inspirational for MP Michael Meacher.

The Labour MP for Oldham West and Royton, spent an afternoon at the Cromwell Street campus, part of the University of Huddersfield.

He was joined by Professor Bob Cryan, the University of Huddersfield vice-chancellor, Sue Bernhauser, UCO dean, and Debbie Bridge, UCO head.

During his visit, Mr Meacher, a supporter of higher education development in Oldham, took a tour of the recently opened £5.5 million university studios.

The extension was officially opened in November, last year, by “Star Trek” actor and chancellor of Huddersfield University Patrick Stewart. It houses specialist facilities for degree courses, such as performing arts, architectural technology and digital arts.

Mr Meacher met staff and students from a variety of departments, saw performing art students warming up, spent time with the digital journalism students, and learned how computer games were constructed.

Mr Meacher, who scheduled the visit after he was unable to attend the official opening of the new building last year, said: “I was extraordinarily impressed.

“The innovation was mind-blowing and the fact all of this is in Oldham is very impressive and inspirational.

“The staff were great and bursting with enthusiasm.”

He said he hoped to welcome a group of digital journalism students at Westminster soon.

Mrs Bridge said: “Mr Meacher’s visit has come at an important time in the expansion of the university campus and we are delighted to welcome him back to see the recent developments.”
