Long way down . . . Corrie’s Sue Nicholls, better known as Audrey Roberts, trains for the abseil event
A SOAP star is urging Oldhamers to flex their fund-raising muscles and take on a New Year challenge.
“Coronation Street’s” Sue Nicholls, who plays Audrey Roberts, is backing a campaign by Together Trust, the North-West’s oldest and largest children’s charity, to sign up volunteers to several fund-raising events.
The charity says the challenges are ideal for those who haven’t quite managed to stick to New Year’s resolutions and for whom the possibility of a “New You” is wearing thin.
Runners are needed for several marathons, including the Bupa Great Manchester Run, on May 17, and the Bupa Great North Run, on September 20.
And for daredevils, the charity’s abseiling team is offering volunteers the chance to tackle a 130ft free fall at the Velodrome in Manchester on March 8.
Sue said: “The Together Trust was founded in 1870 right on our doorstep in Quay Street in Manchester. As a local charity that supports some of the most vulnerable young people and families throughout the area, it is a cause that I hold very close to my heart and I really want to encourage people to get involved.
“I haven’t made any big New Year’s resolutions such as running a marathon but I will be sporting a ‘New Me’! Hopefully people will spot the difference when they next see me on their screens!”
Together Trust provides care, education, support and improved life opportunities for young people, helping more than 1,400 people a year who are experiencing emotional, behavioural or social difficulties, physical and learning disabilities
Fund-raising manager Philippa Hartley said: “This is the perfect opportunity for supporters to start the year on a high and do something rewarding.” For details call Philippa on 0161-283 4885
