OLDHAM Music Centre is set to raise the roof when it hosts “The O Factor”.

Schools have been running talent competitions and the winners will appear in a grand final on Friday, March 27, at Our Lady’s Roman Catholic High School, Royton.

Those taking part fall into one of three categories: singers, singing groups and singer-songwriters.

Contestants have also been organised into three age groups: years four to six, seven to nine and 10 to 13.

The Oldham music service is renowned for its work in classical music, but it has been offering a broader range of classes for popular music for some time.

Cabinet member for children, young people and families, Councillor Kay Knox, said: “This is an exciting initiative and I would encourage as many of our secondary schools as possible to get involved.

“The ‘X Factor’ is very popular and running an Oldham version for our talented young people is a brilliant idea.

“I wish all the participants the best of luck”.

Oldham Music Centre’s music co-ordinator, Martin Ashurst added: “Schools have been running their own heats, the winners of which will appear in the March grand final.

“If schools have been unable to hold their own heats, but still wish to take part they can nominate their champions to represent their school.

“The top three acts will be presented with prizes. We are also very appreciative of the financial support we have been offered by the Stoller Charitable Trust.”
