Selfless Martyn heads to Africa to help orphans

A COMPASSIONATE NHS worker was flying off to an orphanage in Uganda today to help improve the lives of some of the poorest children in the world.

Martyn Price (39), associate director of the health improvement service from Oldham Community Health Services, will visit the Luwero region of the country — as part of the Revive a Life Uganda project.

He will be using experience gained from spending four years in Namibia, as a volunteer with Voluntary Services Overseas, in the field of HIV/AIDS management.

The project aims to provide a better life for children, most of whom have been orphaned by AIDS and are living in terrible conditions, by providing better healthcare, facilities and education.

Revive a Life was set up in 2006 by Colin Bonser and his wife Hilary, of Hardman Street, Chadderton, after a visit to the orphanage. It is run with the help of volunteers from the Revival Church in Derbyshire.

Mr Price explained: “I am very passionate about using my skills and knowledge to improve the lives of these children who have very little.

“It is only by working together that people’s small contributions can make a huge difference.

“Our vision is to provide six to eight houses for the children in the future — that will only be possible through the Revive a Life Uganda project.”

Mr Bonser, who is also heading out to Uganda with his two daughters, said he was deeply touched by the history of these children and where they came from.

He said: “They are unwanted, abandoned or orphaned. We aim to give them the best care we can and ensure they grow up feeling wanted and valued.”

During the 11-day visit, the team will welcome abandoned or orphaned children from slum areas into newly built family homes, allowing them a clean and safe and loving home environment.
