Cash incentive to downsize homes

OLDHAM Council is backing an incentive scheme to encourage the over 60s living in large family homes to downsize.
The authority is working with First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) and a range of housing associations in the borough, to identify older people who wish to switch to smaller, easier-to-run homes.
The housing groups are prepared to offer a financial support package of up to £600 to each householder aged over 60 who downsizes.
This money is to assist with the move into a smaller property.
As an alternative option, housing providers can instead assist directly with the move.
A dedicated support officer would be assigned to support with the move to a new home including taking over responsibility for disconnections and new connections with the utilities.
Housing providers are also prepared to waive the four-week notice period, if possible, for people who wish to move quickly into smaller properties.
The initiative has been launched to coincide with the release of homes refurbished by Housing 21 under the PFI2 Project and there are a number of bungalows that have now been completed.
These properties have been fully refurbished with new kitchens and bathrooms.
They have been redecorated throughout and fitted with new carpets heating systems and boilers — all to a high standard.
Councillor John McCann, cabinet member for community services and housing, said: “There are many people out there who are living in larger homes than they actually need or want and we would like to encourage those people to consider a smaller home.
“I must emphasise that any moves will be by choice only, no one will be forced out of their current homes.
“All we ask is that people consider the alternatives.”
A show house has opened in Chadderton so people considering downsizing can see for themselves an example of the types of properties on offer.
Households living in a council or a housing association property who are interested in the scheme should call 0161-770 1114 for further information.
