Birthday girl Edith Milne
HARD work and Oil of Olay is the secret to a long and healthy life — according to Edith Milne, who will celebrate her 102nd birthday with family and friends tomorrow.
She enjoyed a trip in a stretch limousine to celebrate her 100th birthday, but will have to make do with a more relaxing day tomorrow following a recent fall.
But cheerful Edith always makes sure she is smartly turned out — and won’t go anywhere without make-up.
The great-great-grandmother still lives in her own home in Salem and enjoys reading the Chronicle every night.
Edith was born in Bower Street, Derker. As a youngster, she went to school in the morning and worked in a mill in the afternoon.
She went full-time at Lees and Wrigley’s Mill, Glodwick Road, at the age of 14 — only giving up her job as a cleaner at Breeze Hill School at the age of 72.
A keen singer, during the First World War Edith entertained wounded soldiers at Oldham Coliseum and the former Royal Theatre in Horsedge Street.
Married to Clifford, who died 30 years ago, they had five children before the family expanded to include 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Daughter Maureen, who visits every day to do Edith’s cleaning, shopping and cooking, described her mum as “brilliant”.
She added: “Mum has always led an active life and has always worked hard.
“She likes to be smart, she always likes nice clothes, and she won’t go out without her make-up.”
