Mosque marshals to cut accidents

SEVEN Oldham mosques are leading the way in child road safety with the introduction of mosque crossing marshals.
Every night, children attend their mosques to learn Arabic and according to the Road Safety Unit most accidents involving five to 12 year-olds are likely to take place then.
To highlight the project, two sessions are being held at the Pakistani Community Centre, Glodwick, on Tuesday and Thursday between 10am-4pm, where children and parents will be educated about road safety and given information about the mosque marshal scheme.
The mosques which have joined the scheme are Pitt Street, Waterloo Street, Retford Street, Khadijah Centre in Glodwick, Ross Street and Nagina on Werneth Hall Road, Coppice.
Programme coordinator Ruth Williamson explained: “The sessions are to raise awareness to children and parents about the schemes, and how the marshals will be there to help chaparone them across the road.
“This is one of a range of educational initiatives aimed at reducing pedestrian casualty rates in Oldham.”
