Behind bars: the savage who stabbed, punched, kicked and bit his defenceless victim

A THUG who went on the run after he savagely stabbed, punched and bit a man in Oldham town centre has finally been jailed for five-and- a-half years.

Terence Calder (26) left his victim in such a state that hospital staff were unable to stitch his wounds because they were so big.

Calder was also given an extended licence period of three years at Minshull Street Crown Court yesterday. It means if he commits an offence within the first three years of his release, he will automatically return to prison.

Calder (26), of Wenfield Drive, Blackley, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent at an earlier hearing.

His 31-year-old victim was drinking in Aruba Bar, Fairbottom Street, in the early hours of November 2, 2006, after attending a family funeral. As he was leaving he bumped into Calder who punched him in the face, knocking him across the road.

He was pushed on to the bonnet of a parked car and fell to the ground defenceless before Calder sat on him, punching and kicking him the head.

Calder then stabbed him three times and bit him on his right index finger. He only stopped when he was pulled away.

The victim was treated at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Scene of crime investigators recovered a silver lock knife from a near-by alley where CCTV captured Calder running away. His fingerprints were also found on the car bonnet.

He was arrested days later but went on the run after being charged and bailed by the courts. He was later found during a raid on a house in Oldham.

Det Con Dave Millwood said: “Calder’s assault was absolutely savage. It was not just one punch but a sustained and frenzied attack.

“Rather than face up to what he did, Calder then chose the coward’s way out and went on the run.

“However, if he thought he could escape justice he was mistaken. We never gave up in the hunt for Calder.”
