Club Call highlights hard work by local community organisations.
Today, reporter JANICE BARKER hears how weekly get-togethers at
a Friendship Club brighten Tuesday afternoons.
Winter wind and rain may be miserable outside, but inside the citadel of Shaw Salvation Army, in Farrow Street, there is always a cheery welcome.
The Friendship Club is well established as the place where board games, quizzes, music and trips out bring people together.
Run by Capt Tony Godwin, his wife Heather and other volunteers, the club offers afternoon tea, but also organises Christmas parties and dinners, and trips to pantomimes.
Capt Godwin said : “We have about 20 members, mainly women, and a few men, but we always welcome new members.
“They enjoy getting together. Sometimes they just want to come for a chat and company, sometimes we have speakers from other organisations.
“Subs are £1, and the numbers are always better in the summer when there is better weather.”
The Friendship Club meets every Tuesday from 2 pm to 3 30 pm.
