Apology over grit bins
Date published: 17 February 2009
RESPONSIBILITY for grit deliveries has been taken over by the Government and private sales of grit have been suspended.
But careful planning by Oldham Council means the borough’s motorists should be able to use their cars if we get another snowfall.
The council will focus on clearing main routes which means minor roads may suffer and grit bins may not be topped up as often.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Infra-structure Councillor Mark Alcock said: “The council is not able to refill all grit bins until new deliveries are permitted.
“We apologise that we have not been able to respond to all requests for extra gritting and the filling of grit bins and hope that residents understand that this is not in the control of the council.
“Oldham has some of the hilliest and highest roads in the country but through good working practises the council has managed its grit stocks effectively. Council gritting teams have done a fantastic job in keeping roads as clear as possible during the recent severe weather and will continue to do so.”
