Free lights for young cyclists

POLICE in Oldham have come up with a bright idea to light the way forward for young cyclists.

Officers from Failsworth and Hollinwood Neighbourhood Policing Team and representatives of Unity Partnership will fit bicycle lights free of charge for children aged 10-16.

A boy was recently hurt in a road accident in the area and police hope the initiative will prevent other accidents.

The lights will be fitted at the Netto car park on Hollins Road, Hollinwood, on Friday (10am-2pm).

The event is a joint initiative, with funds raised by Unity Partnership’s road-safety unit, Limehurst Village Trust/Regenda Housing, Regenda Youth Senate, Contour Housing, Gremlins Cycle Centre and Netto.

PCSO Gary Skinner, of the neighbourhood policing team, said: “A young boy was seriously injured in the area recently when his bike was in collision with a vehicle. By holding this event and fitting as many cycle lights as we can, we hope to prevent a similar incident occurring.”

Insp Dave Stopford said: “This is a very worthwhile event which will go a long way to keeping our youngsters safe on the road. Although the mornings and evenings are starting to get lighter, it is still important for young cyclists to be visible to motorists at all times.”

Stephen Whitehouse, Unity Partnership’s cycling-to-school co-ordinator, said: “We want to encourage children and young people to cycle and to have active and healthy lifestyles.

“At the same time, it is important that they are aware of road-safety issues.

“Lighting and visibility are essential requirements for cycling safely and Unity Partnership is keen to promote this free initiative.”
