A LOCAL squadron of the Air Training Corps is flying high after receiving a grant and praise from the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester.

The 2200 (Oldham) Squadron Air Training Corps received a contribution of £500 from the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund.

It was presented in a ceremony at the squadron’s headquarters in Wellyhole Street, Lees, by Lord Lieutenant Warren Smith.

He inspected the squadron and told the cadets how proud he was of them.

He added: “I have been impressed by the high standards of behaviour, good manners and dress.

“You are a credit to yourselves, your parents and the Air Training Corps.”

Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Mike Holroyd, said: “We are most grateful for this contribution.

“It will be used to purchase a computer and power point projector. Information technology is being used more and more within the Air Training Corps.”

The squadron takes part in activities such as flying, gliding shooting and sailing. It is also possible to achieve a St John Ambulance qualification in first aid as well as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and BTech qualifications. There are also opportunities to attend annual camps in the UK and overseas as well as international exchange visits. Anyone who wishes to join can visit the squadron at Wellyhole Street, e-mail them at oc.2200@aircadets.org or call 0161- 624 1937.
