NEW FACE . . . Simon Byrne
THE Greater Manchester Police Force has appointed a new deputy chief constable.
Simon Byrne, currently Assistant Chief Constable at Merseyside, was selected from six candidates.
While at Merseyside, Mr Byrne oversaw the introduction of neighbourhood policing and he is the national lead for cannabis policing.
He also has experience in uniform, CID and headquarters roles.
Appointments panel chairman Councillor Paul Murphy said: “GMP is one of the largest forces in the country.
“Our officers are among the best there is and our chief officer vacancies always attract the highest calibre of applicants.
“The interview process is designed to ensure the most suitable candidate for the role is appointed and that has certainly been the case.”
The position became available in December, after the previous deputy, David Whatton, became Cheshire’s Chief Constable.
Mr Byrne is expected to take up his £128,808pa post, a five-year appointment, within the next three months.
