CHARITY fundraisers are celebrating after totting up their 12 month takings to reveal a £45,518 boost for Christie Hospital.

Oldham-based Christie Hospital fundraisers had a special cheque printed representing the total amount they have handed over during the year to the world-famous cancer hospital.

It amounts to almost £1,000 a week, and chairman and founder member Lilian Walsh sent out a big thank-you to the people of Oldham who made it possible. Much of the money has been raised by pubs and clubs holding social and sponsored events, and Lilian said: “The money raised is down to all those people — we just go along and help out when we can.”

She admitted it was getting harder to raise money with the credit crunch and continued closure of pubs and clubs, and added: “People just haven’t got the money to give.

“It’s a big achievement on everyone’s part that we have been able to raise so much over the past year.”
